Showing non-standards

We still have to show the
three colours, Cuckoo, Jubilee and Spangled as ''non-standard'' birds untill we have confirmation from the
PCGB and the Orpington Club that they have obtained their standard status, which may take some time, the PCGB sent out a news
letter containing the guidelines for showing non-standard birds not long ago. We used to enter our non-standards in the AOC classes
at shows, and the birds were always judged accordingly, they could be placed, or even sometimes as we have done, won the class,
but they were not allowed to go up onto 'champ row'. But the PC do state in their rules, that if a show is being run
under PCGB show rules, non-standard birds should not be entered in these classes. They must be entered in a non-standard class.
Alot of smaller shows don't put non-standard classes on and if they do, they tend to be a mixture of all softfeather heavy
breeds. If in many instances there is no non-standard class provided for them, they simply must not be entered. You can always
ask the show secretary to put on a non-standard class, and most will endeavour to do so if the interest and numbers are there.
But obviously, they must be given notice!

Above, our National prize winner hen.
Our first BIS 2011-Barnsley! We also have fun showing our standard
colours of Orpingtons, in particular our white birds. They are also getting quite rare, along with the fashion of colours,
keeping white birds white is notoriously difficult, and a reason why they aren't so popular as their darker relatives.
They need to be ideally kept under cover away from direct sunlight or they appear 'sappy' or yellow. They also tend
to need two baths! and no yellowing feed such as maize or keratin as this can also make them yellow in the feather and legs. We won our first Best in Show with a large white Orpington, something which is a bit of a feat, our club President, Mr Will
Burdett MBE, did actually comment that he couldn't remember when someone had won a BIS with a large white!
